Thank you, Gil and Bonnie, for your good news and congratulations to the birth of your granddaughter! All the best to the baby, her parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.
My Preface to 2008: A poem by Wilma Mauk, with greetings to all Gandenbergers in the world.
BEATITUDES of a FAMILY GENEALOGIST
Blessed are the great-grandfathers, who saved embarkation and citizenship papers, for they tell WHEN they came.
Blessed are the great-grandmothers, who hoarded newspaper clippings and old letters, for they tell the STORY of their time.
Blessed are the grandfathers, who filled every legal document, for these provide the PROOF.
Blessed are the grandmothers, who preserved family Bibles and diaries, for these are our HERITAGE.
Blessed are fathers, who elect officials that answer letters of inquiry, for--to some--the ONLY LINK to the past.
Blessed are mothers, who relate family TRADITIONS and LEGENDS to the family, for one of her children will surely remember.
Blessed are relatives, who fill in family sheets with extra data, for to them we owe our FAMILY HISTORY.
Blessed is any family, whose members strive for the PRESERVATION of RECORDS, for this is a LABOR of LOVE.
Blessed are the children who will never say, "Grandma, you told that old story twice today." |

Tilo, I wanted you to know that we continue to appreciate your work connecting the scattered Gandenbergers worldwide!
We are happy to announce that our daughter, Kaylee (Gandenberger) Tanner, and her husband Steven Tanner, have just had a new baby daughter, named Alexandra Noel Tanner. She was born on Christmas eve December 24 2007 in Lincoln, Illinois USA. This is their first child, and our first grandchild.
All the best to you, your family, and all Gandenbergers in the world.

INFORMATION
"The American Stamp Dealer & Collector" published in its May 2007 Issue an interesting article: THE SEARCH FOR GEORGE WILLIAM GANDENBERGER, Jr. (1897-1964) AND HIS PHILATELIC PERIODICAL: LIVE NOTES by Brian J. Birch with a great deal of help from Tilo Gandenberger
"I use biographies to lighten the bibliographic articles I produce and introduce an element of human interest in what is essentially a dry subject. The real problem in philately is locating the biographies. ... A couple of years later, on the 5th of January 2005 to be exact, I received an e-mail from one Tilo Gandenberger which began as follows:
By chance I found today at the web site www.norbyhus.dk/fipliterature/biographies.html your very interesting information about Philatelists and Dealers of the past. There is also listed one Grandenberger Jr., Geo., mentioned in George Vincent Freethy "Who's Who in American Philately", San Francisco, 1916. I can give you some biographical information about this person. I'm sure, his surname is misspelled, maybe in the original source, maybe when copying the name from the source. I'm sure, because I'm a genealogist and family history researcher of all Gandenbergers worldwide in past and present for 10 years.
All Gandenbergers can be united in one common family tree. You can read the Gandenberger family history at my web site www.gandenberger.homepage.t-online.de Gandenberger is a very rare surname and I found the name in some sources misspelled, but because the surname is such rare, I could always identify the misspelled Gandenberger persons. The surname Grandenberger don't exist in the world, not in past, not in present. The listed Grandenberger Jr., Geo. is correctly spelled: Gandenberger Jr., George W.
Naturally, I knew that the mistake could not be mine and it took me only a few moments to turn up Freethy’s book and determine that in fact, it was my mistake and Tilo was quite correct.
It turned out that Tilo Gandenberger had been researching the Gandenberger family since 1995 and had traced it back to its origin in Pfungstadt, Germany in 1618. The whole Gandenberger family history can be found at www.gandenberger.homepage.t-online.de. A fascinating site in both English and German, well worth a visit even if your surname is not Gandenberger!
Since Tilo was not a philatelist and as atonement for not spelling his name correctly, I researched George William Gandenberger, Jr. in all of my philatelic references and, together with Tilo’s genealogical input, produced the following biography. Any further information would be gratefully received, especially a copy of our subject’s elusive philatelic periodical Live Notes. ..."
This is only the beginning of Brian Birch's article. In the whole it is four pages into the magazine. Please contact me if you are interested in a copy of the article. |

A MESSAGE FROM THE PAST: Arthur Zoebelein (1926-1999) wrote a short story about his youth in New York City and the importance of his classmate GLORIA GANDENBERGER (born 24 Feb 1926) for his life. HOW "GLORIUS GLORIA" HELPED ME PASS THE AFSA APTITUDE TEST by Art Zoebelein (reprinted from the Spring 1995 issue of The Phoenician; here only an excerpt):
... In 1938, when I returned to Public School 136 after summer vacation to enter eighth grade, a longtime former classmate named Gloria Gandenberger attracted my full attention for the first time. Something had happened to her over the summer months. She had changed. I had an almost uncontrollable desire to maximize my time with her. ...
My opening with Gloria came a few weeks later when the sign-up sheets were posted for after-school clubs. In addition to the usual ones there was a new one, sponsored by the formidable Dr. Dormont, the serious and somewhat stuffy principal of P.S. 136. This club would explore something called Esperanto....and Gloria had signed up for it! I had no idea what that word meant, and I didn’t care. With alacrity I placed my signature under that of Gloria. That would guarantee me one hour every Thursday of sitting next to the golden-haired Gloria, a heaven-sent opportunity!... - Gloria returned to my consciousness 12 years later during an interview with the AFSA. Imagine my surprise when I found that the test consisted of some Esperanto tasks. My memory was triggered, and out came a flood of information beyond the basic rules given in the test booklet (and, oddly enough, it was Gloria Gandenberger, not Dr. Dormont, whose memory was reawakened by this sudden confrontation with Esperanto). I did very well on the exam and was hired on the spot. My 30-year career in cryptology was launched, and the rest is history. So I salute you, Gloria, wherever you are! You will never know the major part that you unwittingly played in my life....and that’s really quite a pity!(complete story: look at my website LINKS) |
